Pastor's E-Letter

What a spectacular week of weather we have had!  I hope you have had a chance to get out and enjoy!

We are well into the season of Lent.  Our Lenten prayer studies have kicked off and around 100 of you are delving deeper into prayer with us.  In our Daily Message Bible readings, we have finally finished reading Leviticus and about all of the sacrifices in the Temple (all that blood - ick!)...I don't know about you, but I am enjoying being in the book of Hebrews now.

This weekend we are going to continue our sermon series "Roadmap to Relationship" and study more about the Lord's Prayer and how that leads us into a relationship with God.  I think you'll resonate with some of what we talk about in worship this weekend.

As always, the music and the fellowship will be great this weekend.  We don't want you to miss out on any of it.

We look forward to seeing you all in worship.

Blessings to you,

Kirsten

P.S.  By the way, this weekend is the official Scouting recognition weekend.  We'll be recognizing our Scouts (Boys, Girls, Adventure Crew, etc.) in worship.  So, if you are in Scouting we invite you to wear your uniform to worship this weekend.

Please be in prayer for the family of Grace Strahs who died yesterday, February 5.  A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 pm in the Penthouse at Pikes Peak Tower where Grace lived (1912 Eastlake Blvd. - near S. Union Blvd. and Airport Rd.).

Please also lift in your prayers the Millard family on the death of Terry "Moose" Millard earlier this week.  At Moose's request, there will be no memorial service.

Lord, hear our prayers for the families of these beloved ones who have gone on to your eternal home.  Amen.

1-20-09 Note re Marion House

Marion House:  Think back to July 19th 2008.  That was Sunrise Church day at the Marion House Soup Kitchen.  I know everyone in the church was and still is very excited about what we did that day.  We had over 200 volunteers from Sunrise serve meals to over 700 needy people and Sunrise also provided all the food and drinks for the occasion.  OK so with all that said, the Missions Ministry is looking to make this even bigger for Sunrise People.  We are working with the Marion House Staff to do a quarterly Sunrise service day at the Marion House.  We need 25 to 30 volunteers.  These service days would be Feb. 16, May 18, Aug 17 and Nov 23.  We need volunteers to serve and prepare meals, and clean up from 7:00am until 2:00pm.  It is preferred that volunteers work the entire shift.  For these service days the Marion House will be providing all the food.

Also start thinking about the Sunrise Cook Out It will probably be a lot bigger this year as the need at the Marion House is much greater.  The tentative date for this is Sep 19th with a back up date of Sep 23rd.

If you are interested in being a participant in the quarterly service days, please contact Gary at 598-7013 ext. 22 , 719-337-8538, or e-mail garyw@sunriseumc.com.

There is a meeting scheduled for Feb 5, 2009 at 6:30pm, room 218.  If you are interested in being a part of this great ministry please mark this date on your calendar.

  Happy New Year!

We are continuing to celebrate the New Year here at Sunrise Church!  God is good!  All the time!

I know that some of you are just worn out from the Christmas season:  too many celebrations, too much activity, too much food, too many people, too many bills, not enough celebration of the true gift of the season, Jesus.

Some of you are just sad that your favorite time of year is over.

Don't despair...it is a new year...a chance to start fresh:  to be renewed.

We'll be continuing to explore the subject of that fresh start in worship this weekend.  Hopefully, we'll be able to help you with a fresh start in the New Year.

You'll want to be with us in worship.  Whether it is snowy or windy or calm, it will be warm and welcoming here this weekend.

The music will be great (as always) and God's Spirit will be present with us.  Start out your new year by worshipping God with us!

See you this weekend!

Blessings to you all,

Kirsten Barlow

P.S.  We have received a new shipment of the Daily Message Bibles.  They will be available before and after worship this weekend, while supplies last!

Pastor's E-Letter

Happy New Year!

I hope that you all had a joy-filled Christmas and a safe and happy New Year's celebration!  We had a wonderful year-end at Sunrise!  You all invited and welcomed your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors to worship with you and worship they did!

We had over 2,600 people with us on Christmas Eve as we shared the light of Christ with all who came.  What a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior!

But just because Christmas is over, it doesn't mean that we are done celebrating.  We are going to start off the New Year right and talk about how we have a fresh start in the New Year.  This weekend, we'll talk about our hopes, our dreams, and our opportunities for a new life in the New Year.

You won't want to miss worshipping with us.  Don't wait until Easter or next Christmas to reconnect with the body of Christ here at Sunrise.  Come and join us!  You'll be glad you did.

Blessings to you all,

Kirsten Barlow

Veterans Weekend.  Please wear your uniform !!  Alternatively, as we have done before, wear your ribbons.  We want to honor you for service to our nation.

11-07-08 Sunrise E Letter

  Dear Sunrise Friends,

It has been a busy week in our church and in our nation!  Regardless of your views on the outcome of the recent elections, remember that our mission as a church hasn't changed.  God still loves us and calls us to share that love with others.  God still cares for those in need and calls us to do the same.  God's Spirit is still moving.  God is still pouring out His blessings.  We are still singing and praising God.

Come join us this weekend for our Celebration Weekend!  We will be serving cake and coffee after each worship service to celebrate our stewardship campaign.  If you have not yet had a chance to drop off your 2009 Offering Commitment card, this weekend would be a great chance to do that.  We'll have a special gift waiting for you as you submit your card.  We will Soar! together.

We'll also be observing Veteran's Day during all of our worship services.  On Sunday at 9 & 10:30 am in the Sanctuary, the choir and orchestra will be performing a special tribute created and arranged just for Sunrise.

Also, don't forget that the November Communicator is now available on-line.  You can click on the word newsletter in the upper right corner of this document or on the link below for the latest information on what's up at Sunrise:  www.sunriseumc.com/files/November_Communicator.pdf

Looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend as we celebrate and praise God!

Blessings,

Kirsten Barlow
