TLC (The Lord Cares) Pharmacy provides a limited number of free prescriptions for the poor and uninsured in Colorado Springs.
TLC Pharmacy was newly licensed in September 2009. Within the year, organizers hope to obtain a special designation making TLC eligible for bulk donations from pharmaceutical companies. They are also pursuing legislation which would allow nursing homes and hospicees to donate unused and unopened drugs to charities such as TLC. Long-term plans include a complete drug formulary to fill prescriptions for the indigent uninsured across southern Colorado.
The sponsoring church is Open Bible Baptist Church, which has operated a free medical clinic for the past six years. Its pastor, Rev. Jeff Martin is one of TLC's organizers, along with Randy McFee, a retired licensed pharmacist, and Marcella Ruch, who started Mission Medical Clinic five years ago and recently retired as CEO. Many other churches in town are providing financial support, including Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist denominations.
Help is needed! TLC needs pharmacists and other volunteers. To make a tax-deductible donation, or to offer other forms of assistance, call TLC Pharmacy at 596-4449.
